INTERESTING FACTS (a la wikipedia)

Flags is the third studio album by New Zealand singer-songwriter, Brooke Fraser.

– It was released on 8 October 2010 by Sony Music Entertainment in Australia. A concert tour in New Zealand, North America, the United Kingdom and Australia is underway to promote the album.

– The album has been commercially successful in Australia and New Zealand, peaking at #3 and #1 on the charts of those countries respectively.

– The lead single, country-pop song “Something in the Water”, has peaked at #1 on the New Zealand Singles Chart.

– Fraser cited her move to Los Angeles as a major inspiration, saying “I was really frustrated and felt like I needed to get away and be somewhere where I could completely focus…and just to try and get a little bit of head space. It was the best decision we ever made”. She called Flags “a graduation”.

– Writers of tracks on Flags include Fraser, her husband Scott Ligertwood, and Switchfoot’s Jon Foreman.

– The album was produced by Fraser herself, which she called “one of the scariest things I’ve ever done”.

– Wood and Bone released the album in the U.K. and the United States on 12 October.

Flags received positive reviews from music critics. Andrew Leahey of allmusic said that Fraser “stretches her boundaries by focusing on ambience and atmospheric textures”, and rating the album three-and-a-half out of five stars, dubbing it “a pleasant listen even during its weaker moments”.

– The album’s lead single “Something in the Water” was a #1, the first time a New Zealand artist secured the top positions in both the singles and albums chart since June 2004, when Ben Lummis’ One Road and “They Can’t Take That Away” were #1.

– In the U.S., Flags debuted on the Billboard 200 at #59 on 30 October 2010. The same week it also appeared on the Rock Albums chart at #19, the Digital Albums Chart at #14, the Independent Albums chart at #9, and the Folk Albums Chart at #4.

– “Something in the Water” was released as the album’s first single, on 2 August 2010.

– Received positively by critics, it was described as “an unexpectedly perky country-pop ditty”.

– Brooke Gabrielle Fraser was born on December 15, 1983 in Wellington, New Zealand.

– Brooke Fraser is an award-winning folk-pop and Contemporary Christian music singer-songwriter.

– Fraser is the eldest of the three children born to former All Black (a New Zealand rugby team), Bernie Fraser and his wife Lynda Fraser.

– Fraser took piano lessons between the ages of seven and seventeen. She started writing songs at age twelve and taught herself the acoustic guitar at fifteen, although despite her singing success she has never taken singing lessons.

– In 2002, while Fraser was in Auckland, Scotty Pearson, the drummer for Elemeno P, organised a meeting with producer Matty J for her. Matty J became her manager, liaising with the major labels who had shown interest and compared their offers. Fraser had about five different labels offer her deals and chose to sign a multi-album deal with Sony Music.

– The making of the album Flags is documented in a series of videos that can be found on her website.

– After the success of her first album, Fraser moved to Sydney, where she has lived since 2004.

– She commutes to the U.S. for touring. On March 17, 2008 she married Scott Ligertwood, in Sydney, changing her name to Brooke Ligertwood. “Brooke Fraser” has remained her stage name for her activity as a Sony BMG recording/touring artist.

– Despite the Christian character of much of her music, she has been quite vocal of her discontent with the commercialized nature of some of the Contemporary Christian Music industry, wishing to disassociate herself with those simply making profit from the sacred nature of Christian music.
