Rain – Patty Griffin

pattygriffinSONG OF THE DAY

“Rain” by Patty Griffin (1000 Kisses, ATO Records, 2002). Composed by Patty Griffin.

MY TAKE

I first heard this artist on Putumayo’s American Folk album, performing her beautiful composition “Rowing Song”. This Putumayo collection has definitely been one of my favorite albums since 2007, when I started getting into Putumayo, because it essential served as my 101 introductory course into the contemporary folk music scene, which, after having been a traditional and ’60s folk fan my whole life, felt like a natural progression in my late twenties.

So, Putumayo leads me to Patty Griffin, which leads me to go to the library and see if I can’t find more by her to listen to. I am then introduced to her 2002 album 1000 Kisses (at the Troy Public Library), and the first track, “Rain”, hits me like a ton of bricks, though, to be frank, most of Patty Griffin’s songs are heart-wrenchers and thus slay me. The music video (see below) really enhances the song beyond the profoundness of just listening, so I encourage you to actually watch it, and not just let it play and listen. I don’t think I’ve ever said that before, so that’s really saying something!

No doubt Patty Griffin gets suggestions upon suggestions about people to play a gig with. Well here is one more; for 14 years a great band at the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, SC has been holding the Gospel Brunch every Sunday possible. Simply known as Glory, these two are made for each other.
