Can’t Stand Losing You by The Police

The Police-775190SONG OF THE DAY

“Can’t Stand Losing You” – The Police (Outlandos d’Amour, A & M, 1978). Written by Sting.

INTERESTING FACTS (from wikipedia)

– Two music videos exist for the song. One features the group playing the song on a stage with Sting wearing huge glasses. Slow motion shots of the group live appear here as well. The second features the group performing the song in front of a red backdrop. This was filmed on the same day as the red backdropped version of “Roxanne.”

– The single was banned by the BBC because of the controversial cover (an alternate cover was released in some places). As Sting described in a 2000 Revolver interview:

“ …The reason they had a problem with “Can’t Stand Losing You” was because the photo on the cover of the single had Stewart standing on a block of ice with a noose around his neck, waiting for the ice to melt. ”

MY TAKE

One of my favorite Police songs of all time, and that’s saying a lot because I am a huge fan. I have loved these suicidal lyrics since I was a teenager and got the band’s greatest hits for Christmas. This song is Jamaican-angst, a crazy genre that only the Police could invent. I even sing along to the dissonant harmonies of the later chorus, which by the way is on of the great choruses of the Police repertoire. Speaking of their repertoire, let’s make a top 10 list!
