SONG OF THE DAY
“That’s All” by Nat King Cole (1953). Written by Alan Brandt and Bob Haymes.
MY TAKE
Isn’t this a beautiful love song? I wish I’d included it somehow on my wedding playlists, but there just wasn’t room.
I am also so grateful that Nat King Cole was able to record a version of it for me. I am not a fan of Sinatra, and am dismayed whenever people know his version of a song but are unawares of other artists’ versions, especially the versions which are much more brilliant than Frankie boy. This is one of those songs that everyone and their mom and their grandmommy knows Frank’s version of, but…ugh. Nat King Cole’s voice is so rich, silky, smooth, loving, tender, true, honest, genuine, compassionate, controlled on this song that I can’t believe it isn’t HIS version that is preferred. It certainly is preferred by me! And, to boot, it’s the first cover!
LYRICS
I can only give you love that lasts forever
And a promise to be near each time you call,
And the only heart I own
For you and you alone,
That’s all, that’s all.
I can only give you country walks in springtime
And a hand to hold when leaves begin to fall,
And a love whose burning light
Will warm the winter night,
That’s all, that’s all.
There are those, I am sure, that have told you
They would give you the world for a toy.
All I have are these arms to enfold you
And a love time can never destroy.
If you’re wondering what I’m asking in return, dear,
You’ll be glad to know that my demands are small.
Say it’s me that you’ll adore
For now and ever more,
That’s all, that’s all.
~interlude~
If you’re wondering what I’m asking in return, dear,
You’ll be glad to know that my demands are small.
Say it’s me that you’ll adore
For now and ever more,
That’s all…that’s all.
