Wedding Playlists 9: On The Road mix

1. Road To Nowhere by The Talking Heads (4:28 ) – We thought this would be a funny set of lyrics to start out a road trip mix to! And we love the Talking Heads!
2. Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap by AC/DC (4:12 ) – Todd was raised on AC/DC, and has very slowly gotten Joan to accept and eventually like this music. It took about 5 years.
3. Detroit ’67 by Sam Roberts (4:05 ) – Amazing Canadian artist that Joan got into while still living in Detroit, and an amazing song about the place she called approximate home for nearly two decades.
4. I Feel Free by Cream (2:51 ) – This is a true song for the open road. If you were Jeff Stoltman, you’d have all the windows down and the sound system pumped up for this track.
5. I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For by The Buena Vista Social Club featuring Coco Freeman and U2 (4:53 ) – We love U2, so finding a new twist on an old classic was certainly a treat for us, and we hope you’ will agree!
6. Young Folks by Peter Bjorn and John feat. Victoria Bergsman (4:39 ) – This song was used during episodes of two of our favorite shows, Californication and Parenthood (starring Joan’s cousin), so it holds a special place in our hearts, and rocks to whistle to!

This is the playlist for the first of two discs in the Wedding Roadtrip CD set that we gave all of our male guests as a wedding favor. Again, because most of our guests were couples, they got both this set and the set I blogged about on July 21st & July 22nd, so a total of four discs and two sets. Confused yet? The reason we did a road trip classic rock mix is really all about our audience: almost everyone was coming in for the wedding weekend from out of town, so giving them some more upbeat, recognizable music to rock out to on the road was really the point. Plus, if each of our aunts, uncles and cousins have one thing we love about them most, it’s their taste in music! Everyone in our families is not only well-versed in an expansive range of genres and decades and artists, but they’re also really open and inquisitive. Mix CD’s really just made sense. This particular CD is just for rocking on the road, but the other CD in this set combines lyrics about love with some pretty solid rock. Enjoy!

7. Starman by David Bowie (4:14 ) – Joan loves Bowie, has for awhile, and finally clinched her victory of having Todd love Bowie too with this song. Now they sing Bowie together, it’s quite a sight!
8. Back In Black by AC/ DC (4:14 ) – Another great driving song and Todd Swatling bonafide favorite.
9. Sunday Bloody Sunday by u2 (4:42 ) – Truly an essential song on any mix intended for a road trip. The drums are steering-wheel worthy, and the song begs for the volume to be pumped up loud!
10. This Land Is Your Land by Sharon Jones and The Dap Kings (4:31 ) –  Joan hated the movie that gave this song airplay and attention last summer, but was grateful that people were finally talking on a national level about Sharon Jones et. al. She’ is the true bomb! Doesn’t this song make you play finger saxophone and horns? It does for us!
11. Kodachrome by Paul Simon (3:33 ) – We love Paul Simon, so it was hard to choose what of his illustrious oeuvre would be most widely appreciated on a road trip mix, but we’ are sure this awesome 1973 track is a safe bet.
12. It’s Only Me (The Wizard Of Magicland) by The Barenaked Ladies (2:34) –  BNL is great to drive to, hands down, and always sing-a-long-able, but this song is especially super-catchy, and has great lyrics!
13. Peaches by The Presidents of the United States of The United States Of America (2:51 ) – All hail weird songs of the 1990s that have sustained.
14. Jenny Says by Cowboy Mouth (3:19) –  This is the preeminant Stoltman Family road trip song, since the late 90s. All seven know the lyrics through and through, all seven scream the third chorus.
15. Overkill (Acoustic Version) by Colin Hay (3:47 ) – If you’re a Scrubs fan, you will certainly recognize this artist and song. If not, appreciate this incredible solo acoustic cover of an old Men At Work song by the band’’s former lead singer.
16. You Never Give Me Your Money by The Beatles (4:03) –  Joan’s favorite Beatles song to sing to Todd, even though it isn’t true. We’re both big Beatles fans, we were raised that way, and we will raise our own that way.
17. Funk 49 by The James Gang (3:52 ) – Joe Walsh’ was in this Cleveland band in the 1960s and, as you can plainly hear, they rocked hard.
18. Semi-Charmed Life (Radio Edit) by Third Eye Blind (3:40 ) – Ooh, ooh! Classic 1990s! You better learn all of the lyrics because it’s way more fun to sing along to than just to listen!
19. Silly Boy by The Blue Van (3:21 ) – Cait Stoltman introduced us to this song last summer, and we’ve both loved it ever since! Its so much fun to sing in the car!
20. Black Betty by Ram Jam (2:32 ) – It’s obviously a great rock song and worthy of a road trip mix, even without having a story attached to it.  But this song is special to us because it always reminds us of driving in Buffalo with our dear friend Florie. She rocks crazy hard to this song!
