Tight Jeans – Jaheim

jaheim1SONG OF THE DAY

“Tight Jeans” – Jaheim ( Still Ghetto, Divine Mill/ Warner Bros. Records, 2002).

INTERESTING FACTS (from wikipedia)

– The album was released on April 29, 2002 (my birthday), and it reached platinum status.

– He is the grandson of the late 1960s soul singer Hoagy Lands, hence Jaheim’s birth name “Jaheim Hoagland”.

– Jaheim was found guilty in 2005 of the use of an unapproved tinted window in Hillsborough, NJ. [That’s cold, NJ. How can a gangsta live in such harsh conditions?] Oh yeah and there were some drug and resisting arrest charges, as well.

MY TAKE

I guess I could say I found this song in 2002, but only partially. Literally. I had just finished a terrific classic R’n’B mix for Amber and I to enjoy in the dorms of early 2000’s Buffalo. I called the mix CD Old School, and, I’ll be frank, the playlist was good, though it feels a little staid now. Maybe I should do a remake? [Joanee, why do you keep challenging yourself to do hours of work on this blog when you haven’t even told anyone about the blog. Is it because you’re afraid you’ll run out of steam at this rate, and if you keep thinking up new and great ideas, you know you won’t ever stop and this thing you’ve wanted for so long can finally happen for reals?]:

  1. Five Stairsteps – “Ooh Child”
  2. Gladys Knight – “If I Were Your Woman” [Ooh, damn! I sing this song out loud and proud]
  3. The Staple Singers – “I’ll Take You There”
  4. Gladys Knight – “Neither One of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye)” [Ooh, damn. She SINGS this song!]
  5. Chaka Khan & Rufus – “Tell Me Something Good”
  6. Minnie Riperton – “Lovin’ You”
  7. Stevie Wonder – “Isn’t She Lovely?” [I need to make a Top 10, but I’m not sure this would make it; I’m tired of this song now]
  8. The Spinners – “I’ll Be Around”
  9. Al Green – “Let’s Stay Together”
  10. Cheryl Ladd – “To Be Real”
  11. Aretha Franklin – “Night Time Is The Right Time”
  12. Heatwave – “Always & Forever”
  13. Marvin Gaye – “Mercy, Mercy Me” [I need to make a Top 10 Marvin Gaye list]
  14. Ike & Tina Turner – “Proud Mary”
  15. Dusty Springfield – “Son Of A Preacher Man”
  16. Stevie Wonder – “Boogie On, Reggae Woman”
  17. Sly & The Family Stone – “A Family Affair” [one of my favorite songs by this group, one of my favorite groups]
  18. Aretha Franklin – “Respect”
  19. Three Degrees – “Precious Moments” [catchy, disco-era hit. I would leave disco-crossover stuff off the next time I did this list]

But how does Jaheim fit into this story? Well, my non-existent friends, it’s simple. Amber enjoyed the mix, but wanted to introduce me to succeeded the great works I had referenced. Artists that had grown up on the Old School tracks and had been inspired to work as musicians themselves, and who, like us, looked to the past with pride. So, here’s her track list, we’ll call it New School:

  1. Aaliyah & DMX – “Back In One Piece”
  2. D’Angelo – “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” [this video = sex. seriously]
  3. Angie Stone – “No More Rain” [total throwback sampling here, can you recognize it? Anne Peebles’ “I Can’t Stand The Rain”]
  4. Erykah Badu feat. Common – “Love Of My Life”
  5. D’Angelo – “Brown Sugar” [this song = sex. guaranteed.]
  6. Angie Stone – “Life Goes On”
  7. Mary J. Blige – “Everyday” [best chorus to work out my moves to]
  8. Erykah Badu – “Next Lifetime” [great story]
  9. Jaheim – “Tight Jeans” [the song of the day!]
  10. Angie Stone – “Wish I Didn’t Miss You” [my favorite line to sing: “all you wanna do is smoke chronic”]
  11. Jerzee Monet – “Work It Out”
  12. Marques Houston – “That Girl”
  13. Erykah Badu – “On & On” [I like the live version better]
  14. Nappy Roots – “Po’ Folks” [i have most definitely driven around in a periwinkle blue cadillac listening to this song. no joke.]
  15. Yasmeen – “Blue Jeans” [what does this mean?: “like when we used to climb and run around and mack the fool”]
  16. D’Angelo – “You’re My Lady”
